Walnut varieties on the Family Farm
The walnut varieties that can be found in our Orchards are Šejnovo, Plovdivski, Drjanovski, Novosadski kasni and Geisenheim 139. Those are specific Croatian names. They are similar to Chandler as one of the most productive walnut varieties known in the world with walnut nuts.
When choosing the variety, we took into account the time of flowering, quality and sensitivity to plant diseases and pests. Healthy seedlings bought from expert and experienced nurseries were planted.
– Šejnovo: This variety is known for its high-quality nuts and good yield. It originates from Bulgaria and is valued for its large, thin shells and excellent taste.
– Plovdivski: Also originating from Bulgaria, this variety is known for its robust growth and high resistance to diseases. Walnuts are usually medium-sized with a good shell-to-kernel ratio.
– Drjanovski: Another Bulgarian variety, recognized for its high productivity and large nuts. It has good resistance to common walnut diseases and produces nuts with a high kernel percentage.
– Novosadski kasni: This Serbian variety is known for its late harvest period. It produces large, high-quality nuts and is prized for its late flowering, which helps avoid frost damage.
– Geisenheim 139: Originally from Germany, this variety is part of the breeding program at the Geisenheim Research Center. It is known for its large nuts, high-quality shell and high kernel percentage.
The space between the rows, i.e. the inter-row space between the walnuts, is maintained by mowing in accordance with the rules of organic farming. Other fruits or plants can be planted between the rows of trees, such as chokeberry and hazelnut.
